"Midwives: health heroes for women, adolescent girls and newborns" is the theme of the International Day of the Midwife this year.
Trained midwives save lives and could avert approximately two-thirds of the nearly 300,000 maternal deaths and 3 million newborn deaths that occur each year, if deployed in larger numbers.
