New edition of compendium of laws impacting women and girls in Turkmenistan was issued in the beginning of the year and presented today at the United Nations building.  National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan jointly with UNFPA, United Nations reproductive health and rights agency organized the presentation.

The presentation of the compendium entitled “Women’s Rights in Turkmenistan.  International legal documents and legislative acts of Turkmenistan” gathered the representatives of the Working group of the Interdepartmental Commission for ensuring the implementation of Turkmenistan's international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as the members of Mejlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan, public organizations, academia and mass media.

Mr. Batyr Orazov, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan, welcomed the guests of the event and expressed appreciation to UNFPA for the continued partnership.  He noted the results of the country in promoting gender equality.  The adoption of the National Action Plan on Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2015-2020, with UNFPA support, continues to serve as the major instrument for gender mainstreaming in all spheres of life.

“Development and publication of the compendium is one of the strategic actions of the National Action Plan on Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2016-2020,” said Ms. Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator and UNFPA Representative in her opening speech.  “Dissemination and practical use of the new edition of compilation of laws impacting women and girls in Turkmenistan among policy decision-makers, members of Mejlis and public in general will contribute to the implementation of regulations and norms of the Convention on Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (CEDAW) and other human rights obligations relating to gender equality.”

The publication includes national and international laws and legislation in the area of women’s rights.  The compilation includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Equal Remuneration Convention, among many others.  Forty-nine existing laws and legislative acts of Turkmenistan in the area of women’s rights were also included into the compendium.

The latest collection of national and international laws will serve as a practical tool for the policy decision-makers, members of Mejlis, the law enforcement system, and public organizations. It can be used as a handbook for researchers, graduate students, teachers of schools and institutions of higher education, and all those who are interested in issues of women's rights and freedoms. A compendium is also intended for the legal awareness of population about the laws impacting women and legislative guarantees for their observance.
