UNFPA Country Director for Turkmenistan Ms. Mieko Yabuta visited Turkmenistan this week. The purpose of the visit was to reconfirm the UNFPA’s commitment to support the Government reforms in the areas of women and adolescent reproductive health and rights, gender equality and population and development.
UNFPA Country Director for Turkmenistan Ms. Mieko Yabuta visited Turkmenistan this week. The purpose of the visit was to reconfirm the UNFPA’s commitment to support the Government reforms in the areas of women and adolescent reproductive health and rights, gender equality and population and development. This is the first visit of Ms. Yabuta, newly appointed UNFPA Country Director to Turkmenistan.
During the mission, UNFPA Country Director held a meeting with Mr. Batyr Niyazliyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. The extensive discussion was focused around the issues of bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNFPA. The sides discussed the future ways for UNFPA to support the country in advancing the principles of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), specifically in the context associated with a status of Turkmenistan as an upper-middle-income country, the newly developed Country Programme Action Plan 2016-2020, and the process of nationalizing the Sustainable Development Goals in Turkmenistan.
UNFPA Country Director congratulated the Government of Turkmenistan on the steps taken towards enhancing the national ownership of its development programmes. Self-financing of the contraceptives procurement and recent signing of the Co-financing agreement on funding the Programme for Development in Turkmenistan serve as a good example of the Government’s commitment to ensure better reproductive lives for Turkmen women, men and young people. Ms. Yabuta noted that the agreements position Turkmenistan as the model in the region and expressed confidence that other countries in the region will follow Turkmenistan’s example.
During the meeting UNFPA congratulated the Government on the investments made in young people’s development, and reaffirmed UNFPA’s readiness to support the Government in organizing the International Youth Conference this year. Ms. Yabuta noted that young people comprise a large percentage of the region’s population, and the International conference will serve as a platform for exchanging successful experiences of countries with policies that help realize this demographic dividend. Such policies include improving access to quality education and jobs, as well as investing in the health, particularly the sexual and reproductive health, of young people.
UNFPA Country Director also paid courtesy visits to the representatives of the diplomatic missions and heads of UN agencies to discuss the joint projects and explore new possibilities for partnership in Turkmenistan.
