Strengthening the gender equality provisions in the Constitution of Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT – Strengthening of gender equality provisions in the Constitution of Turkmenistan was the focus of the workshop conducted by the UNFPA international consultant for the members and specialists of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan’s president announced a constitutional reform in 2014 to reflect the country’s commitment to market economics, democracy and human rights. “In the reform of the legal system of Turkmenistan we are guided by the highest international standards, global best practices, and follow the standards, which form the basis of international law,” stated the President of Turkmenistan during his keynote speech during the first meeting of the Constitutional Reform Commission.

Best international practices of incorporating gender equality principles in national constitutions were offered during the workshop, facilitated by Ms. Aysel Vazirova, UNFPA international consultant. The participants were introduced to the concepts of gender-sensitive approach to legislation; current situation with gender equality related provisions in various national constitutions; basic internationally developed toold for gender analysis of legislation and main steps in introducing gender-sensitive provision and gender equality principles into a Constitution. 

“The topics generated strong interest and provided good informational foundation for future parliamentary initiatives in the area of gender and women’s rights,” said Ms. Vazirova.

At the end of the workshop, a technical consultation was held to develop constitutional provisions ensuring gender equality.
