Ashgabat, 6 March 2023 - The UN Turkmenistan, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, a global women’s solidarity day, hosted an event dedicated to women’s achievements and their contributions to the sustainable development. This joint event was organized with the support of IOM, UNFPA, OHCHR and UNICEF under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Turkmenistan.

 

This year's International Women’s Day theme aims to convey the message that acknowledging women's achievements in all spheres, including transformative technology and digital education accelerates progress towards gender equality. Hence, the main objective of the joint event was to recognize achievements of women and girls in Turkmenistan and establish a genuine conversation between successful women and invited guests, among which there were representatives of government and public organizations, embassies, universities and youth.     

 

The event served as a platform for women and girls from different professional spheres to spotlight their tremendous efforts, share their challenges and experiences that have motivated and inspired young participants in the audience. By sharing their path to success, those women revealed how their determination to accomplish their goals was an essential constituent of their struggle for equality.

“Women has a crucial role in socio-economic development of the society and therefore successes of every woman contributes to the prosperity of our country” highlighted Ms. Myahri Byashimova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

“UN team will continue to work towards achieving gender equality so that every woman and girl can fully benefit from their rights and opportunities” emphasized Mr. Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.

Among guest speakers the floor was given to Ms.Yanyl Kujukbayeva, Head of Cancer Prevention Department, Dr. of Medical Sciences and in her speech she has highlighted that “Women’s health and well-being lay the foundation not only for her family’s health but also for the community’s health. Therefore, meeting women’s health needs is an investment to the country’s future prosperity”.

The joint event was also marked by an exhibition that featured projects of women and girls from different spheres such as digital projects of female students from Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan, national clothing designs from local designers, handmade apparel presented by women from Blind and Deaf Society of Turkmenistan and public organization “Yenme”, handmade jewelries and cosmetics presented by local women business-owners and others.

International Women’s Day is not only an occasion to acknowledge women’ achievements and rights, but also its a day for joining efforts in working together toward achieving gender equality, which should be actively carried on by everyone beyond one day.
