A two-day seminar was organized for the specialists of the Institute of Strategy and Sustainable Development under the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan and other stakeholders on 28-29 November 2017 to improve national institutional capacity in the field of population analysis and data processing using modern methodologies and IT applications.
The seminar is one of the key activities of the joint project of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund and the Institute of Strategy and Sustainable Development titled “Disaggregated data for national sustainable development”. The focus of the seminar was on main approaches to demographic trends analysis, population data sources including census, registers, regular statistics, thematic surveys and data bases, principles and methods of birth and mortality rate analysis, application of analysis results in development of strategies and programs od socio-economic development. A specific attention was paid to the use of software program Spectrum in making projections for socio-economic development taking into account projected population trends.
UNFPA international expert on demographic analysis Ms. Irina Troitskaya facilitated the two-day seminar. The participants of the seminar were specialists from the Institute of Strategy and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Ministry of Education and the State Statistics Committee.
The importance of the seminar is that it provides theoretical knowledge and practical skills on the use of demographic data and analysis for better tailored and more advanced socio-economic development strategies and programs. It also familiarizes the national specialists on the use of modern technologies in their daily work.
UNFPA and the Institute of Strategy and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan have initiated partnership by signing the joint project in 2017 within the framework of the UNFPA Country Program for 2016-2020 and the Co-financing Agreement between UNFPA and the Government of Turkmenistan. Within the framework of the joint project it is envisaged to learn the methods of integration of demographic trends in the processes of sustainable development, analyses of current statistics using modern technologies and making short- and long-term forecasting of social and economic development. The gained knowledge is expected to significantly improve the theoretical and practical skills of national specialists, that are especially important in the development of more advanced national development strategies and programs, for the wider use of demographic data in a day-to-day analytical work, and the use of statistics to monitor the implementation of national development programs and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted at the global level under the auspices of the United Nations in 2015.
