on the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan - Within the framework of the joint efforts between the Institute of State, Law and Democracy and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Beijing + 25 National comprehensive review was presented to the members of the Interagency Commission for the implementation of the international obligations of Turkmenistan on human rights and International Humanitarian Law. This meeting was held as part of the global process of providing national reviews on the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 1995.
The National Review is a platform that provides countries a unique opportunity to inform the international community about the progress that has been made in achieving the goals and objectives in area of gender equality. The Review provides information on key legislative and administrative measures that have been introduced over the past five years. In addition, the Review takes into consideration aspects that will further improve national legislation, accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals, implement the National Plan of Action for Gender Equality of Turkmenistan for 2015-2020, conduct a National Survey on the health and status of women in the family, as well as other priorities, which empower women and girls.
During the meeting, UNFPA international expert Ms. Ionella Horga presented the results of an assessment of the interagency response to gender-based violence. This assessment identified specific areas for improvement, including the development of a comprehensive model and specialized services for victims of gender-based violence (domestic violence). Based on the results of the assessment, it was recommended to develop and put into practice the guidelines for the provision of services for the prevention and response to domestic violence with an involvement of key sectors such as health care, social assistance and law enforcement agencies.
The Interagency Commission was also informed about the upcoming Global Summit, which will be held in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya in November 2019 to facilitate the acceleration of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The Summit will offer a unique opportunity to reinforce country-specific commitments that will further advance the ICPD Program of Action.
