Cervical Cancer CAN be prevented

calendar_today 22 January 2018

This week (22 - 28 January) is marked as the Cervical cancer prevention week in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region.

Did you know that ...

  • Cervical cancer is the second most deadly cancer among reproductive-age women in our region – and it affects mostly younger women at the peak of their career & caregiving responsibilities.
  • Cervical cancer kills over 18,000 women in Eastern Europe & Central Asia each year,
  • But 90% of cases are preventable.
  • Well-organized screening programmes can reduce cervical cancer rates by up to 80 per cent or by up to 90 per cent if combined with HPV vaccination of adolescent girls.

In Turkmenistan, the Cervical cancer prevention Month is marked each February.

UNFPA partners with the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan on the latest methods of prevention and treatment, as well as data collection in cervical cancer by establishing the national cancer registry.

In 2016, the government introduced a new government-sponsored vaccine against Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that causes cervical cancer, which will have an impact on the reproductive health of women in Turkmenistan.
