Turkmen delegation was invited to participate in the 30th Anniversary Conference of Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) to share the experience of conducting the HBSC survey on young people’s health and well-being in the country.

The high level delegation represented  by Mr. Ashyr Atayev, Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Chary Nazarov, Director of Scientific Clinical Center of Mother and Child Health, and Mr. Azat Atajanov, UNFPA Population and Development Programme Associate, participated at the Anniversary Conference, which was held in St. Andrews, United Kingdom.

Healthy youth continues to be a priority on the Government’s agenda in Turkmenistan, where people younger than 25 comprise nearly 50 percent of its population.  In the recent years, the Government showed commitment to development of the National Strategy on Children and Adolescent Health.  Therefore, the HBSC survey results will serve as a baseline for development of the evidence-based National Strategy.

It’s notable that Turkmenistan is the first country in the region to conduct the survey, developed with use of the WHO adopted HBSC methodology and regularly conducted in more than 43 countries.  Successfully carried out in different parts of Turkmenistan, the survey data can also be used for cross-country comparative analysis and research.
