UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund announced the Media competition for the best published media materials on youth health issues, including adolescent reproductive health.

Ashgabat, 1 April 2013 – UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund announced the Media competition for the best published media materials on youth health issues, including adolescent reproductive health.

The overall goal of the competition is to increase access of young people to information on youth health, including adolescent reproductive health, issues.  The competition also aims to enhance journalists’ knowledge of specific topics related to youth health; improve the content and the quality of reporting in the Turkmen press; increase the coverage of youth health issues in leading daily and weekly news media in Turkmenistan; and strengthen the professional network of talented journalists interested in and committed to covering these issues.

The role of mass media in objectively promoting the issues of reproductive health and rights, including adolescent reproductive health, is crucial for achieving the Millennium Development Goal 5b, which aims for the universal access to reproductive health.  Therefore, the goal of this competition is to draw the attention of Turkmenistan’s general population to critical importance of such issues as healthy lifestyle of young people, prevention of STIs/HIV among youth, gender equality and reproductive rights.

The topics for submissions may vary from adolescent reproductive health, HIV and STIs prevention, gender and reproductive rights, education in the area of reproductive rights to youth leadership and participation in socio-political discussions related to reproductive health.  The competition is open to anyone who publishes their article on given issues in the national media between August 2012 and August 2013. There are four categories for submission: print, online, TV and radio materials.  Eligible works must be presented to UNFPA between 1 and 10 September 2013. Winners will receive an award in November.

UNFPA: Delivering the world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
