UNFPA Country Director for Turkmenistan Ms. Giullia Vallese visited Turkmenistan this week. The purpose of the visit was to reconfirm UNFPA’s commitment to support the Government reforms in the areas of women and adolescent reproductive health and rights, gender equality and population and development. Ms. Vallese also participated in the international conference “Partnership for Development Financing at the Heart of the Great Silk Road.”
UNFPA Country Director had series of high-level bilateral meetings with government partners. Key points raised at the meetings were the upcoming Regional Conference to mark the 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Government’s role in the ICPD@25 review process. The sides also discussed UNFPA support in the upcoming large-scale Government initiatives, including Census 2022, Health and Status of Women in the Family and Health Behavior in School-aged Children surveys. Improving the quality of maternal, newborn and adolescent healthcare services was also a focus of discussion with the partners.
During her mission, Ms. Vallese visited Maternal and Child Hospital in Ashgabat, where the UNFPA partners gave a tour of the reproductive health and maternity facilities. As a result of the UNFPA and Government collaboration, in the recent years the quality of family planning and maternal and neonatal services has been improved in the process of standardization of clinical practice, and the Government continues increasing the investments in reproductive and maternal health issues.
UNFPA Country Director also paid courtesy visits to the representatives of the diplomatic missions and heads of UN agencies to discuss the joint projects and explore new possibilities for partnership in Turkmenistan.
