The “Demography for decision-makers” crash course was organized in Ashgabat for deputy ministers and heads of government organizations.

The course was piloted by the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan, together with UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Embassy of France in Turkmenistan.

Dr. Youssef Courbage, the Director at the National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris, conducted the crash-course.  The purpose of the course was to raise the awareness and knowledge of the decision-makers on theory and practice of drawing on population data to make informed decisions and formulate policies that promote sustainable development.

Development means improving the lives of people.  Policies and fiscal decisions must take into account the information on who are the people, where and how they live and how their lives change.  Globally, UNFPA provides advisory and technical support to governments to integrate population dynamics, reproductive health, youth and gender in public policies and expenditure frameworks.  It provides policy and programme guidance on issues such as migration, ageing, urbanization, and changes in population age structure.

Additionally, UNFPA works to strengthen the capacity of the public servants and policy makers in the application of modern methods of data analysis for decision-making taking into account the demographic trends.

“Population dynamics matter!” said Dr. Courbage. “Demography is not only statistics.  It’s important to look deep into the lives and mindset of the people to be able to make public policy planning successful.”
