18-20 March, 2024 - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan organized a training workshop for representatives of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan and members of the Social Policy Committee of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. The purpose of the workshop was to build the capacity of specialists in the field of women's reproductive rights and to improve the practice of monitoring compliance with these rights, increasing the responsibility and accountability of organizations for the respect of human rights, especially in relation to persons with disabilities.
Among the participants were the representatives of the Ombudsman Office, the Committee on Social Policy of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, reproductive health offices in Ashgabat, as well as representatives of public organizations.
Ms. Yanina Arsenyeva (Estonia), International consultant of UNFPA, held an informative seminar, sharing her valuable experience in the field of women's reproductive rights, highlighting the importance of equal access to reproductive rights, the need to strengthen specialists’ capacity in this field and the value of gender equality. She also provided practical advice for monitoring reproductive rights, examples from her work around the world, and inspiring success stories of women.
As a result of the workshop, significant steps are made toward improving the practice of reproductive rights monitoring, as well as increasing the responsibility and accountability of organizations for the observance of human rights. The workshop organizers plan to conduct regular monitoring activities to continue to improve access to reproductive rights for women, including women with disabilities.
