The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, presented the results of the Assessment of the status and progress of UNFPA prioritized 17 indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Globally, UNFPA has identified those SDG indicators as core to the implementation of its mandate and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). UNFPA is also responsible for methodological aspects and assisting countries in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating relevant data.
The priority indicators are to demonstrate the country's progress in the areas of reproductive health, gender equality, reducing inequalities, climate change, building peaceful and inclusive societies, and ensuring quality population data for sustainable development.
On July 9, 2023, Turkmenistan presented its second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of SDGs, which was commended by UN member states, at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The VNR 2023 included priority Sustainable Development Goals for UNFPA and ICPD, such as 3, 5, 11, 13 and 17. Also, Turkmenistan has launched a national statistical reporting platform dedicated to the SDGs. It is based on the list of SDG indicators adopted by Turkmenistan and contains detailed information, including metadata, and charts (graphs) on SDG indicators.
The meeting participants discussed the results of the Assessment, took the recommendations for information and actions regarding data disaggregation, application of SDG metadata, further improvement of the quality of national indicators, regular updates of information on the national SDG platform, and active participation of Turkmenistan in relevant international surveys and research.
The review and discussion of the Assessment results are especially important in the year of celebration of the 30th anniversary of the ICPD and in the run-up to the global meeting of the UN Commission on Population and Development, from 29 April to 3 May 2024, in New York, where the main topic will be a discussion of countries' progress towards the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action over the past 30 years. Turkmenistan is a member of the UN Commission on Population and Development and will be represented by a national delegation to participate in the global meeting and present the country’s achievements towards the targets of the ICPD and SDGs .
