Violence against women is any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life. (United Nations Organization, Declaration on Elimination of Violence against Women. New-York, UN, 1993)

Many women like Selbi in this video experience different forms of violence. Across the world, at least 1 in 3 women will experience physical and sexual violence, mainly at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends. Such traumatic experience affect not only women herself, but the entire society, as well as her children and next generations ahead.

Together we can help Selbi and thousands of women and families by promoting the norms that will build a healthier and stronger society.

We can start with speaking up about respect, equality and dignity. As long as we all know our rights, speak up and take action, we will be able to build a more just and prosperous world that benefits all of us.
